WHAT is CHIROPRACTIC?
Chiropractic is the science that addresses the DIRECT relationship that
our spinal column has on our nervous system. The various STRESSES
in our life can cause misalignments in our spine, these are referred to
as SUBLUXATIONS. These misalignments occur most often by physical
stress on the body(car accidents, falls, etc.). However, they can also
occur when the body is under a lot of emotional stress, causing us to
carry our bodies in ways that eventually cause subluxations in the
spine. The other factor that chiropractors look at is what you put into
your body. Nutrition plays a vital role not only in your spinal health, but
your overall WELL-BEING.
SYMPTOMS of a SUBLUXATION
When a vertebra becomes misaligned, whether it happens suddenly or
over time, a variety of symptoms can occur. Obviously the most
common is back or neck PAIN. This pain can range from sharp and
stabbing to dull and aching. Muscle spasms can occur, and if a
subluxation has been present for a long time, there can be numbness
or tingling in various parts of the body, most commonly being the arms
or legs. The reason we feel such pain is when a particular vertebra
misaligns, it puts pressure on the nerves that exit directly above or
below that vertebra which has misaligned. Your brain gets the signal
this has happened, and interprets it as PAIN!
WHAT a CHIROPRACTOR DOES
A Gonstead Chiropractor will "adjust" the subluxated, or misaligned
vertebra to its normal position. When we say normal, we are speaking
for that particular person that is being adjusted. It is actually very rare
that someone has a textbook normal spine, that being every bone is
aligned perfectly. When the vertebra is adjusted, it allows for the joints
above and below to FUNCTION properly. This also helps take pressure
off of the affected nerve allowing proper nerve function as well.
It usually takes a series of adjustments to arrive at the desired result,
whether that is being pain free, or just improving your overall HEALTH.
A lot of factors are in play to how fast someone responds.
